I couldn't visit Ascension island for several reasons this year. But Ascension Island trip is number one priority in 2014 though I plan to fish remote island off Okinawa and Papua New Guinea.

TJ,

Basil of BHP Tackle told me the Harmattan operate another small boat. I think the small boat is perrect for us because our group is not interested in trolling for marlin.

Scott,

I plan fishing trips to offshore island off Okinawa or Papua New Guinea in 2014, but I definitely go to Ascention Island in June/July to have chances to fish tuna from the shore.

We are three now. (you, David from NC and myself). The max of the trip is four though three are fine with me.

Basil used travel agency. I'll check whether we use travel agency or book directly.

I sent an email for boat charter info and I should get the info soon.

The airfare from England to Ascension Island is 969 URO which is about $1,400US.

The round trip from NY/NJ to London, England is about $1,000US.

The room rate for double occupancy is about 40 - 50 URO which is $55 - 70US per person per day.

Even the cost of air fare is expensive ($2,500US), it is not bad at all considering you pay $5,000US for 14 - 15 days trip on long range  boats out of San Diego.

I am in contact with Capt and the trip will be finalized soon.

The Harmattan has a big boat (36') and smaller boats.

The rate of big boat is 700 British pounds ($1,150US) and the rate of small boat is 500 British pounds ($800).

The dates I am looking for is in July because big tuna are more abundant in July and Nov though tuna are there year round and we might have an opportunity to catch tuna from the shore. Even we don't catch tuna from the shore, they say there are some monster fish close to the shore.

I thought the rates of airfare and lodging are URO dollars, but they are Pound.  So the airfare and lodging is a little more expensive than I thought.

more info

-time difference:

London time is one hour ahead of Ascension Island and 4 hours ahead of NJ/NY

For example, 7:00 pm in London today is 6:00 pm in Acension Island and 3:00 pm in NY.

-flight schedule:

Flights leave for Ascension Island on every Wed and Sun, and leave for England from Ascension Island on every Tue and Fri.

So we stay in Ascension Island for 6 days or 9 days. I prefer to stay for 6 days.

Flights leave from England at 23:00 p.m. and arrive at Ascension Island around 7:00 am (9 hour flight)

and leaves from Ascension Island at 10:00 p.m. So we can fish all 6 days if we stay 6 days.

Another option is to fish on a local boat.

As the local fisherman has a full time job there, we can fish three hours from 5:00 pm to 8 pm on weekdays and 7:00 a,m - 11:00 am on Sat/Sun.

I plan to use the small boat at least one or two days to experience varieties of fishing there.

The rate is 100 British Pounds ($160US) per trip ( 3 - 4 hours).

I sent Capt three sets of possible dates based on his availability and flight schedules.

Two sets of dates are 5 days . (otherwise we have to stay 8 - 9 days due to flight schedules)

One sets of dates are 6 days, but we can fish 6 days because we arrive at Ascension Island at 7:00 am and leave Ascension Island at 11;00 pm.

I almost decide to fish with big 36' boat.

I am waiting for Capt's reply to finalize the trip. There are many interest, but unfortunately the maximum number on this trip is four for comfort.

We are going to fish on big 36' boat daily and fish with small boat in the evening if there is no fry run.

I finally set the dates with Capt Colin.

We leave England on July 9, 2013 and leave Ascension Island on July 15, 2014.

As we arrive at Ascension Island at 7:00 am on july 10 and leave Ascention Island at 11:00 pm, we actually fish 6 days on July 15.

I decided to fish on the 36' boat for more comfort and in case of bad weather.

The other options are to fish on Patrick's small boat late in the afternoon  after fishing on the Harmattan or go to the beach for cast poppers from the shore. There is a good chance of fry run during our trip. In that case, we are on the beach every day after fishing on the boat.

When I checked the luggage regulations of the flight to Ascension Island, Baggage allowance for all non-residents is 27kgs- which includes 4 kilos of hand baggage per person.

I think we need lots of jigs to cover tuna, wahoo, AJ, bottomfish and oil fish.

I am going to find a way to ship jigs to Ascension Island cheap.
