Time is flying.  GT trip with Ed of No Boundaries starts from Sept 28.

Ed, who became a pro staff of Black Hole rods asked me to develop heavier than 8' Black Hole Cape Cod Special Graphite rods. He likes the rods and landed several GT upto 64kg with them, but he said the rods are good for upto 180g lures and he feel heavier rods are needed to use 200g - 250g lures for GT.

Unfortunately Black Hole can not make prototype rods in time for my trip as they are extremely busy.

As soon as the prototype rods are ready, I'll ship them to Ed of No Boundaries for testing.

Tsurusaki San of FCL Labo joins the trip.  He was the guy who introduced GT popping to Japan when he worked for Yozuri in Australia 25 years ago.

It is tough to leave here as bluefin are biting in Cape Cod and yellowfin are biting in canyons now.

But catching 50 plus kg GT is not bad at all. :)

It looks big GT arrive there already as Ed of No Boundaries caught 57 kg GT a few days ago.

This was my second trip to Southern Oman for big GT this year.
The trip had an international flavor as 5 fishermen came from 5 different countries.

Bertrand from France
Lars from Denmark
Andre from South Africa
Tsurusaki san of FCL LABO from Japan
Kil Song from the US

Fishing trips give opportunities to meet new fishermen and we had a great time to fish together on this trip.

We fished for six days on two  boats while mixing GT popping and inshore fishing.

Weather for first three days was not favorable, but it got better later. GT fishing was on and off, but it was really good when bites were on. Inshore jigging/popping was great as usual.

GT popping

Tsurusaki san jigged in the morning while we cast poppers for GT without landing any. He hooked up a GT in 10 minutes after he started to cast FCL Stickbait. :?

Jigging

We didn't spend much time for jigging on this trip and Tsurusaki san and myself jigged occasionally while others cast poppers.
It seemed Tsurusaki san were testing his slow pitch rods and jigs with slow jigging and his catches were impressive.
I brought only one light jigging setup with Black Hole 631XH rod and JM PE2 filled with PE3 line.

It was very impressive to watch Tsurusaki san land a nice grouper with PE3 line reel.

Inshore Popping

Southern Oman provides excellent inshore popping for various species.

We had yellow fin trevally, queenfish and permit on small surface lures on my Spring trip. Those fishes were not there in big numbers on this trip, but we had excellent bream popping instead.

I tested small Black Hole lure with a lip with fantastic result.
I brought only two and both were lost to big emperor snapper.
This is going to be my go to lure for inshore popping.

Hi Kil,

Thanks for the report, very sorry for you that the big GT pulled the hooks just at the boat, but congrats you show it's possible to land a monster Gt with black hole light tackle.

I would have like to be on the boat and to see bertrand's face while you fight big GT with light tackle :-)

when we fished with him we called him " Bertrand The Butcher " :-)

Hi Jerome,

GT didn't pull the hook, but pulled the gaff in the mouth. :) Ed said it happened only twice after he opened the lodge.

I suggested Ed to get a strong hand gaff.

Bertrand used  Black Hole Magic Eye inshore rod and he liked it very much. In fact, he becomes a pro staff of Black Hole rods.

we fished together on the last day. I spent as a cameraman while casting occasionally.

It was fun to watch how they worked their lures. Everyone used different lure.
