I saw this discussion on other site.
Many fishermen ask this question to me, but I can not give the answer right away. Normally I like to use thinner lines if possible.

16 strand JB 80# is thicker than 12 strand JB 100#. The breaking strength of JB is about 150 lb while JB 100#'s is about 130 lb.

The advantage of JB 100# over 80 # is it is cheaper and the line is thinner.
The advantage of JB 80# over 100# is it has higher breaking strain and it is easier to splice.

I guess it depends on the capacity of the reel you're using and the intended size of species. To me: I say use 80 all day unless capacity is an issue. More resistant and easier to work with.
