Is it possible to design a bucktail that would be less likely to snag? I've heard that the flat sided bucktails (lima beans) don't get hung as often but I haven't noticed those using them any better success at avoiding snags.

Is it even worth the effort? What desing would you go with?

I don't think shapes of jigs don't make much difference of snagging.
Whenever I fish rocky bottom, I try tolift jigs as soon as it hit bottom, it reduce snagging. Slight dragging in sticky bottom means snag.

I found a video for making bucktails. It is for freshwater fish, but it can apply for saltwater too.

See the eye of the small round jig. Whenever I use Spro or similar products, I always have problem to insert heavy lines because the eyes are too small.

I think they should make a deepwater 4 , 6 , or 8 oz. bucktail with a 3/0 or 4/0 hook .
